Independence! Self-determination! What is known as confirmed international law, reminds one of liberation and historical progress. But what does independence mean today, for what and by whom? Do we long to fight for or against it? How does post-/colonialism, the cause of many independence movements, continue today? Is independence even possible in a globalized world?

The project “Fight (For) Independence” not only extends over two years, but also geographically over thousands of kilometers, in order to diversify perspectives and de-colonize narratives. For this, Costa Compagnie from Berlin joins forces with the State Theater Nuremberg and the State Theater Oldenburg and departs into two European and two African countries to follow the tantalizing call for “Independence”. The worldwide search path begins in Nuremberg and Franconia. At the hour of Brexit, the artists will travel to the UK and from there to South Sudan, the youngest state in the world after a long struggle for independence. On the basis of concrete experiences and stories of people who the artists will meet personally, a cross-disciplinary and multimedia work emerges. In addition, the research can also be experienced in virtual reality via a website with 360°-film.

In the 2019/20 season, the research will then continue from Mozambique’s struggle for independence through Catalonia’s attempts for separation to German identitarian groups around Oldenburg. Here, the project will present the second production “Independence for You”  (May 2020) at the local State Theater, as well as the choreographic work “Independence in Space” (January 2020) in the Edith-Russ-House for Media Art. All results will be shown in Nuremberg, Oldenburg and Berlin and will go on tour in 2020.
