FASCION

14 WAYS TO LOOK AT A BLACKSHIRT

Gallery Mario Kreuzberg, Berlin  (part 1)

& Ballhaus Ost, Berlin  (part 2)

FASCION / 14 WAYS TO LOOK AT A BLACKSHIRT takes inspiration from Umberto Eco’s 14-part analysis of fascist structures and encircles one of the most striking current, political phenomena in Europe and the United States: the growing facistization of right-wing populist parties within the mainstream and the growth of neo-fascist movements among the youth.

The multi-facetted art project FASCION works as a critical observation towards the aesthetic strategies of a radically changing political landscape. After a street poster campaign in Kreuzberg, a participatory protest-installation at Kottbusser Tor and a choreographic situation at Gallery Mario Kreuzberg in March 2017, now follows the continuation at Ballhaus Ost.

At the center is a  bench press and the question of the de- / politicization of the body and physical sculpture, the meaning of the term movement, the individual and the mass, as well as the group dynamics of coercion and potential. Seven performers embark on a path of ultimate physical exhaustion, while The XX’s “Hot Like Fire” is played live in a loop.

At the same time, visitors have the opportunity to watch interviews with Berlin-based artists from the USA, Turkey, Germany, Chile, Israel, Japan, Argentina and India in another room. Relating to Umberto Eco they describe the threatening, current-political processes in their home countries.

Visitors thus embark on a self-curated experience in which they contemplate on sweat and analysis, fashion and fascism, a masked mass of bodies and self-determined identities.
